I am a photographer from San Jose, California. This website has been my main source of creative output since 2006.
Regarding my ongoing Camera Phone series:
After graduating from art school I got my first digital camera. It was the camera I carried around everywhere, which I used mostly to record nice light, albeit a camera phone.
About a year ago, I read an article in Aperture magazine (#199) where photographer Paul Graham talked about the convenience of the digital camera. That since moving to digital, he rarely uses his film camera. In the article, an interview, he also talked about the decisive moment,
“Someone I know, who’s working on the Cartier-Bresson retrospective at MoMA, was looking at his contact sheets and said to me, ‘The “decisive moment” is nonsense!’ There are ten pictures before and ten pictures after every one of them – he actually took a dozen pictures of people leaping over that puddle!”
I found this thought of capturing the superlative image, before it passes, interesting because my camera phone is able to record the exact second I take a picture. It is synced with the global atomic clock, readily provided at all times by my mobile phone service. As well, I find this thought curious because when I press the button to take a picture there is a second or so of shutter lag.
